If you find your Samsung ice maker is producing hollow or small ice cubes, this can cause serious problems. Sometimes when the ice maker ejects the ice cubes, the small ice ejectors can break the ice, which can split the cubes in half. When this happens, the water in the partially frozen ice cubes can splatter, leaving droplets of frozen water inside the freezer and on the ice maker itself.

This is almost a common problem with ice makers. Most likely you will first find that all of your ice cubes in the ice bucket are sticking together. If the ice cubes are stuck in the dispenser and you can hear it working, the ice cubes are probably sticking together. If you have small ice cubes, hollow ice cubes, or ice cubes that look like they have been cut in half, you need to fix this immediately to fix the problem so that a more serious problem does not occur.

First, make sure that the refrigerator water line is not kinked or bent. A kinked or bent refrigerator water line will result in slow water flow to the water inlet valve.

Refrigerator Maintenance Tip

Make sure the refrigerator water filter is replaced every 6 months, as a clogged refrigerator water filter can cause low water flow, resulting in hollow ice cubes. North Country Appliance Repair Company experts

Why Does The Ice maker Produce Hollow Ice Cubes?

  • Low water pressure

Hollow ice cubes can occur due to low water pressure. Low water pressure in the refrigerator will cause the ice maker to fill too slowly. This can result in not having enough water in the ice cube mold when it starts freezing water to make ice cubes.

  • Broken thermostat

Another problem that can cause hollow cubes to form in the ice maker is a broken thermostat. This will result hollow ice cubes because it will cause the cycle time to be too early. The ice maker thermostat is located inside the ice maker itself. You can check the thermostat with a meter. If you find that the thermostat is defective, remove and replace it.

  •  Ice maker or cooler not aligned

If you find that the mold is not completely filled with water, make sure your refrigerator is level. Place a level on top of your refrigerator and make sure it is level according to the refrigerator’s instructions. You may also have an improperly installed ice maker, and the ice maker itself may not be level. Both of these problems can cause problems with hollow ice.

  • Water valve on wall blocked or not fully open

A water valve located on the wall or under the sink can cause hollow ice cubes to enter from the ice maker. Check this valve to make sure it is fully open and that the mesh inside the valve is not clogged.

  • Water inlet valve defective or water level in ice maker corrected

You may need to adjust the water level for the ice maker. If the ice maker water level is correct, use a multimeter to check the water inlet valve on the back of the cooler to make sure it is working properly and not clogged or partially blocked. If the meter test is inconclusive or the inlet valve is clogged or blocked, remove and replace the water inlet valve.
